Fringe Theatre

Much of the theatre outside of London's West End is referred to as fringe theatre which is the equivalent to Off Broadway Theatre in New York. Fringe venues include small, well-equipped theatres, but are more commmonly rooms above pubs with performances ranging from classic plays, to cabaret, to plays in the languages of London's ethnic minorities. The performers are often emerging young professionals, but can also include amateurs.

Fringe theatre is typically aimed at local audiences. This means that they often give performances with a more local subject matter. However this in way means that they ignore larger, more popular show, with many showing plays and musicals previously having completed their run in the West End.

Because they are often small and aimed at the surrounding community, many fringe theatres are organised as clubs. A annual membership will need to be paid. However most of these theatres provide days membership with the price of a ticket.

There are hundreds of fringe theatres in London. Notable venues include the Wimbledon Theatre, Courtyard at Covent Garden and Theatre Royal Stratford East.
